The kittens are everywhere. I mean EVERYWHERE. This weekend they are headed back to Philly Paws to get spayed/neutered. We have homes for a few but not all - so if anyone is interested - let me know! Ada is very sweet, but has been driving my out of my mind. She is constantly jumping on the kitchen counters for attention, and when you actually want to pet her - she just walks away. Plus, she loves to walk right under your feet when walking up or down steps. I think she is trying to make us fall (this is especially scary when carrying the baby). plus, she constantly hisses at Eleanor and now El is terrified of her and won't go near any room she is in. We have to keep water in the living room for her b/c she is scared to go in the kitchen unless she knows, 100%, that Ada is not there.
But the kittens, oh the kittens. Other than being everywhere, they are pretty great. They love to go out the dog door and just play on the steps in the backyard. they can't get anywhere b/c the wall is too high, so we let them. They are also all good with the baby and like to play with him & his toys. It's pretty cute. They are gentle and Karl will lay nest to him and bat at his hands (no claws) and they let him grab them (we try not to let that happen too often). Even Ada is good with him, she will sit next to him and he will "pet" her. It's pretty cute. Plus, the kittens all seem to like his toys as much as he does. I am sad to see them go, but there is so much going on, we need to take a kitten break. We are moving in August and have a tons of work to do on the new house - so no new batches of kittens for a while. They aren't a ton of work - but they are always underfoot and that's the last thing you need when ripping up carpets and painting (and tearing down walls, and fixing plumbing, ack! don't get me started!)
Here are a few pictures of the kittens playing around.
The kittens are getting so big. We bring them upstairs every evening and let them run around the living room and kitchen. They are fascinated with the dogs and are even good with the baby. Ava is a little bad. she has decided that it is fun to come into our bedroom at 4:00 in the morning and go to the bathroom on the dog bed. Or anywhere in our room for that matter. We think she does it because she is hungry and/or wants attention. And as we discovered this afternoon, it's not just in the morning. So, we shut the basement door at night and we have to remember to shut the bedroom doors during the day. She doesn't go anywhere else. It's pretty weird.
Sorry, it's been a crazy 2 weeks. My sister got married, my brother got married, friends got married. I was sick, the baby was sick. I had a 2 day work meeting with NO computers! How did I make it through!?!? But, now onto better stuff - the kittens.
They have gotten super active and playful. And they just randomly started eating regular cat food. We did show them how or anything. They started with crunchy too. Without any kitten formula to soften it up. They are amazing. Here are a few eating breakfast - with one nursing. It was pretty funny.
Looks like Ada is the winner. She looks a bit like an Ada too. Lily was a close second - there were 2 votes for that one. And sorry Liz, the name Elizabeth came in last. The kittens are doing well. Ada keeps trying to hide them in different nooks in the basement (behind the dryer for example), but we always find them. She is nto doing a great job keeping them clean, so they have had to have a couple baths this weekend, but this just motivates us to get them litter trained a tad early. Walter almost got the hang of it this morning, but ended up getting another bath. I will post pictures tonight.
We also have a visit from my sister's cat, Peggy. She is visiting for the week while my sister Bridget and her brand new husband are in Puerto Rico on their honeymoon. She is hiding out in the nursery because she does not love dogs. But, so far it's been fine. Here is a funny story about her.
And I have just heard from Janet - the new "mom" of Mabel and Dee (who's name is now Hebe). They are doing dandy. Hebe likes to sleep on a heating pad. They are getting along well with Lacey and Otis (their dog siblings) and Zeus (their cat brother) - and just to let you know, I also gave Janet Zeus many years ago. Way before I got into the cat fostering business. Aren't I a great friend. I know. Here is a picture of all the cats in the Janet/Sarah household. Mable is in the foreground and behind her is the giant Zeus and the tiny, newly-named, Hebe.
The mom cat (so far Ada is winning!) has decided to hid her kittens in a new spot in the basement. We had a nice spot for them, with a bed and their food & water, but the mom cat has decided that they like living next to the water heater instead. I think she is paranoid about the dogs, but they never go down the basement. We stuck a blanket back there so they'd be more comfortable. They seem happy.
We think Mary Lee (aka the Runt) is doing better. We are not sure if she is actually nursing, but she isn't weak or sickly - I think we are just paranoid about the runt - due to our previous experiences. She's sure cute when she is eating though!
And it looks like little Walter has found a home. I took some pictures of him this morning to send to his adoptive parents and stuck Michael Lee in a few. Michael Lee thought Walter was one of his stuffed toys.
Yum!
These are some active kittens! We have one runt, who is super cute and tiny, but we think she is getting shoved out of the way during feeding time, so we are supplementing with KMR. It's cool though - she is the only kitten we've ever had that actually doesn't mind being fed - she actually seems to like it. Sadly, we are used to forcing sick kittens to eat. We have to use an eye dropper - she couldn't get the hang of the bottle, but man, she sure sucks it down. Below are the kittens and their new names - they are named after Andrea's grandparents & great grandparents (they had excellent names)!!
Mary Lee - aka the Runt, she was Myrtle, but we discovered that the original Mary Lee was a boy, so we had to switch it up:
Karl - he is all black & pretty sweet, Andrea thinks he looks like a little bear:
Oscar - the original Mary Lee, until we found out she was a he, he's got a little white on his chest and paws:
Walter: I LOVE the white blaze on his nose. If he wasn't named after a grandfather - you know he would have to be called Blaze (doesn't he look scared to death?):
Virginia - the only striped one, and she might already have a home (Hi Katy & Whitfield, you will love Virginia!):
And last but not least - we have the mom. We are stuck on names for her, so we thought people could vote on her name. Here they are: Lily, Elizabeth or Ada. Which name fits her best?
Voting is open until tomorrow.
Lily- 1
Elizabeth - 1
Ada - 3
We just bought home a new mom and her 5 babies. The mom is all black, just like Grace was, and 1 of the kittens is totally black, 3 are black with little splotches of white and one is gray striped. They are about 3 weeks old, the mom is about 2 and they were strays that were brought into Philly Paws yesterday evening (5/26). They all seem healthy. We will find out in the next few days. They are very friendly, maybe a little skittish, but I am sure that will only last a few days. Some pictures!
So, I was not good with updates. But, we ended up naming the kitten Dee and the mom Mabel. They were really sweet and friendly. Dee loved the dogs and the baby (especially the baby's toys). Mabel grew to think the dogs were ok and loved laying on window sills. They were taken to their "forever homes" 2 weeks ago. They have moved to Northern Virginia with our friends Janet and Sarah & their new siblings, Lacey & Otis (dogs) and Zeus (cat). We should be getting pictures of them pretty soon, but from what we hear they are very happy.
Yup - we've gotten a new mom cat with her one kitten. We emailed Philly Paws last week and said we were ready for kittens whenever they got some in. So, they called on Saturday and said they had some and we could come and get them. Andrea went to pick them up and there was one mom with a bunch of brand new babies and another mom with a 4 or 5 week old kitten. They asked us to take her because the kitten had an eye infection and they didn't want her infecting the brand new kittens.
So, the mom is gray and white and the kitten looks just like her (we think she is a girl), but with some stripes. Also, the mom is missing about 2/3rds of her tail. It's a little gross, only because at the very tip there is about an inch of hairless tail & looks a little like a rats tail. But, they are both very friendly and sweet. The papers said they were brought in b/c they were in a house with too many animals. But the mom is terrified of the litter box (so that's fun) and doesn't really seem to be used to being indoors all the time.
But, here are the pictures that I am sure you are much more interested in.
Introducing - Michael Lee - he already loves animals!
Hi all - It's been a while and although we haven't gotten any new kittens (yet!) we do have a happy update. Remember poor, sick Christina? Well, we have an update! She is living with my brother and his girlfriend and is a super active, happy cat. Her name is Lola now and she is pretty awesome. She also just got a new "little" sister - a 1 year old rescued puppy named Cinder. They seem to be getting along pretty well. Here's Lola's (aka Christina's) picture!
